A Path to Citizenship for Entrepreneurs
The Portugal D2 Visa allows entrepreneurs, freelancers, and independent service providers to reside in Portugal. The Portuguese government started this visa in order to raise external resources and investments to grow the Portuguese economy. This visa only applies to non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens who wish to start a business or relocate their existing business to Portugal. You can also choose to invest in an existing business in Portugal. The Portugal D2 Visa is less known than the D7 Visa and the Golden Visa but can be a viable route to permanent residency and citizenship for those looking to work for themselves in Portugal
Visa Exemption
You are able to enter Portugal and the Schengen region with the Portugal D2 visa (26 EU countries). Without a visa, you are free to go about. You generally have the same travel privileges as all nationals of the European Union with a D2 visa. This is ideal for businesspeople who want to visit Europe to network and form business relationships.
Family Perks
With the D2 Visa, you do not need to leave your family behind. With this visa, you can live with your family and they will have the same residency rights as you. This includes a spouse, minor siblings, dependent children above the age of 18 who are in school, and children under the age of 18. Family reunification gives your family the same rights as an individual, including the ability to get permanent residence and tax benefits. If you have family members who are part of the programme, you will need to provide proof of your link.
Tax Incentives: Non-Habitual Tax Regime
You can obtain a Portugal Golden Visa, Portugal D7 Visa, or Portugal D2 Visa to enter the country as a non-habitual resident (NHR) and take advantage of the favourable tax laws. You are able to change your tax residency to the nation under this tax system. You must not have paid taxes in Portugal in the five years before to the application in order to be eligible. This does not, however, apply to corporation taxes.
To support your application, you will need the following documents:
The D2 allows them to open any kind of business in Portugal or to open an arm of an existing business, which may be an easy route for those with established businesses. Unlike the startup visa, there are no limitations on the type of business: you could launch something in the hospitality or tech sector, for example.
Each of those things comes with an initial cost and then there are the ongoing costs of maintaining a company, using the services of an accountant, and paying taxes (corporation and personal) as well as social security.
The independent service provider, namely someone who provides services to Portuguese or international clients, is another category of people that can apply for the D2.
To support your application, you will need the following documents:
Open your business or a branch office in Portugal. Obtain all the license and transfer capital to a Portuguese company bank account.
Fill out and sign the D2 visa application form.
Prepare your business plans and required documents:
After receiving the D2 visa, which is valid for 120 days, the investor has to book a SEF appointment to get the residency permit, which can take up to 6 months, till then the investor needs to carry the proof of appointment.
After 5 years, the investor can become permanent resident and after 6 years, a Portuguese citizen which is a 1 year process.
No one guarantees that you will obtain the visa. Global Citizenship Solution has a Compliance Department which conducts preliminary due diligence check of the applicants to identify the rejection risk and find best solution to overcome with that risk. Due to this most of our clients successfully pass the Due Diligence and get citizenship.
Yes! You must schedule an appointment with the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) as soon as you have your D2 Visa in order to apply for a residency permit. If you have documentation that you have scheduled this appointment, even though your D2 Visa is only good for 120 days, you are good to go. Up until the 5-year point, when you can submit an application for permanent residency, you will renew your residency.
Following six years of lawful residency, you can apply to become a Portuguese citizen. You must have a spotless criminal record, be proficient in Portuguese, receive an A2 Portuguese language certificate, and present supporting documentation, such as a copy of a Portuguese bank account, in order to do this.
Set up a meeting online or in one of the offices. A lawyer will assess the case, estimate the cost, and work with you to develop a solution that meets your objectives.
